Service Opportunities

Be a Group Rep!
Clasped hands

As group rep, you serve as a conduit of information between your group and Intergroup, and the other groups that send group reps to Intergroup’s monthly meetings. There, you’ll meet other group reps, committee members, and Intergroup trusted servants, and you’ll learn about OA in Western MA and beyond.  You may be asked to bring questions or requests back to your group for consideration, and convey your group’s responses to Intergroup. You’ll have the opportunity to participate in marathons or workshops that serve OA meetings in the area or OA as a whole.

Intergroup is a resource for groups; many group problems can be resolved by sharing experiences with representatives from other groups at intergroup meetings. Intergroup selects representatives to attend Region 6 assemblies and delegates to attend the World Service Business Conference.

Western Mass Intergroup meets on the second Sunday of every month, from 6:00-7:15 pm (NOTE THE NEW TIME). All OA members are welcome to attend.

Public Information and Professional Outreach

Public Information involves carrying the message to those who still suffer, while Professional Outreach involves telling those who might refer compulsive eaters to us of the solution that OA offers them. We believe that there are many in our area who suffer from our common disease of compulsive eating, and who might be willing to join us in our common solution – if they knew that the help we found in OA is available!

Millions of people have never heard of OA, and many others misunderstand it. This includes many suffering compulsive overeaters and the various support people who come in contact with them: doctors, nurses, hospital workers, nutritionists, counselors, social workers, members of the clergy, staffs of crisis hotlines and information centers, and others.

World Services offers some great resources for someone who’s thinking about PI / PO work:

Guidelines for Professional Outreach Committees

We see PI / PO as a job for a team, and we presently have no one involved in this work at WMI. Might you be interested in helping out? Please contact chair@oawmass.org!
